ThaiCrafter.com was created as a way of showing off the stuff that we made during the Covid Lockdown. Most of the items on display are made by Mem Moss in her small workshop in the beautiful Krabi Province of Thailand. Mem just can not sit down and do nothing, so, when the lockdown closed down the tourist businesses in Thailand, she decided to start making stuff. It just grew from there. As time went on, more and more stuff was building up on shelves, and with no open outlets, she decided to set up a website.
The whole family joins in, with artist daughter Lana, and wordworker son Jak, its become a bit of a cottage industry.
The next step is to open it up to other talented makers, artists and crafts-people in Krabi, who, with a lack of markets, shops and customers are finding it hard it to make a living.
We love wood. Our house is full of wooden furniture and it never gets boring. Every piece is different and has its own personality.
Thailand has some amazing hard wood species but its expensive, so wherever we can, we recycle, its amazing how a piece of old battered wood can clean up. Old floor boards are my favorite, many have been plastered for years with coats of plastic until you can not even tell that they are made of a wonderful natural material. Its a real joy to put them through the planer and discover amazing grain patterns and color of nature's masterpiece.
For finishing, we only use natural materials that simply help to moisterize the wood and bring out the amazing colors. For any food contact products, we use a mix of beeswax and mineral oil. For most furnishing and decorations, we use shellac.
